Cover-ups and Tattoo Removal

Sometimes clients come to me wanting to cover up an existing tattoo. I always take special care with these. My goal is always to make the previous tattoo non-existent. Often this cannot be done correctly simply by “covering” the tattoo with something darker. The design also comes into play in that we want to use as much of the existing tattoo as possible in the new design. In my portfolio there are a few cover-ups. However I feel that by labeling them I only call attention to the fact that there was a previous eye sore. I also feel that by labeling them, I am in some way taking away from the fact that they are excellent tattoos on their own regardless of what was underneath. Not all jobs are so easy…

For all cover-ups, and especially when something comes along that is just too much for me to be able to figure out I highly recommend laser tattoo removal. At this point I have had my entire left sleeve removed and will probably do more once I get my left arm filled back up. Not without reason but from what I hear the main reason people avoid laser is its reputation for being so expensive and painful. Its really not that bad…

Anytime anybody asks me “Doesn’t it hurt!?” I tell them the only reply I can think of “Not anything like walking around with shitty tattoos” Really folks, its your skin, and nothing is worse than walking around with something that might as well read “BAD IDEA” across your hand. I have done all of my Laser treatment at Dr Tattoff in LA and would highly recommend them. As badly as it hurts (about like getting snapped with a rubber band…repetitively) they have been over my whole arm from shoulder to wrist in under 20 minutes. And taking into account that I have gone multiple times but not covered as much space every time I would say that in total I have been in the chair less than an hour and a half. Not too bad when you take the pain of a couple of hours of rubber band treatment into account against the years that you won’t have that eyesore telling everyone what horrible decisions you are prone to making, the pain really is negligable.

And as with most of my customers my plan for my freshly cleaned skin is… MORE TATTOOS! Often a tattoo can easily be covered with only a couple of laser sessions.
